"I'm a fiction writer."
"I only write children's books."
"Travel book? I can't write that."
"Low content books are the way to go."
Everyone has a comfort zone, but there's no growth there...
No matter what genre you focus on... read a variety of books to broaden your vocabulary. It may seem counterintuitive to read a book about Italy, when you're writing about parrots...
OR
You may not see the need to read that boring statistics textbook, but you never know which one of your characters will become a world-renowned Data Analyst.
What's the point? When you limit yourself to one genre/writing style, you also stifle your creativity. You're so much more than a romance or mystery writer. Yes, you can write homeschool curriculum. Or how about a graphic novel for your teenage son?
Whatever the challenge is... go for it! Take the risk!
There are millions of books available for purchase, but only you can tell a story in a unique way.
So, as you get ready for 2025, ask yourself... Have I limited my creativity? What can I do to venture outside of my comfort zone in the new year?
